Recently, the Dallas Police Department worked with the Public Art Program of the City of Dallas Office of Cultural Affairs and the Deep Ellum community to commission artist Terry Hays to create designs for 140 parking meters that would be placed along Elm Street in Deep Ellum.
The project, entitled Deep Ellum: Eclectic, Energetic, Enduring was unveiled on Thursday, June 29, 2017, and SkinzWraps was proud to participate in this piece of Dallas history. This art installation currently does not have an expiration date and will be available for viewing in the Deep Ellum community as of June 29.
This project stemmed from a previous program developed in 2014, called One Meter at a Time. The parties involved in the 2014 effort were the Dallas Police Department and the Office of Cultural affairs. The goal of this artistic movement was to transform 60 parking meters into works of public art.
The Process of Public Art
Hays was selected by a panel of community members, arts professionals, and representatives from the DPD to create the art that now adorns parking meters in Deep Ellum. Hays came up with ten different designs to be placed on the 140 parking meters.
SkinzWraps was brought on to the project in October 2016, when Hays approached us with scanned versions of his art. We did numerous test prints for coloring options and ensured that the pieces were seamed properly and to Hay’s liking. Since this was an art installation, there was a lot of back and forth between our company and Hays. However, we understand the importance of detail and the amount of artistic drive that goes into each wrap project.
Once the art was approved, we formatted the pieces, printed them, and installed them on PVC. After artist approval, the initial printing and installation took the 3m vinyl car wrap experts and SkinzWraps just a few days. The City of Dallas then went and installed them on parking meters.
